A Whole Woman

In last month’s Motherhood Circle, we spent time thinking about the things we want to make time for that make us feel like a whole woman. So often in motherhood we only look to the things that make us a “better mom”, but if we look at the list in reverse - first seeking things that make us feel like a whole woman - we find that many of those same things help us feel like a better mother, too.

The exercise asked us to create a list of activities big and small that fuel our feminine spirits, and then commit to one per day, one per week, one per month, one per year. We asked ourselves, “What do I need to let go of in order to make space for me to receive?”, and then, “Where do I need to assert myself more in order to make space for me?”.

When I look back over my own list, I find I have made space for quite a few things that fill my soul this month.

  • Time spent in silence and solitude each morning.

  • Reading for pleasure, to my kids and myself each day.

  • Ladies night 1-2 times a month, as well as other opportunities - moments at the park, chatting during soccer practice, a shared car ride - to connect in sisterhood.

  • Taking long walks in the woods with my kids 1 time a week.

  • Sleeping in - until almost 8 am! - nearly once a week.

  • Space away from my family - though not in a retreat kind of way, I have gotten hours “off duty” here and there, spent time away working, and have 2 nights away for training next week.

Reflecting on the above things fills me with gratitude! For some of these experiences I had to shift things around, assert my needs, or let go of something (A clean house! My controlling nature! Sleep!) in order to make space for what I need as a whole-woman. Other things on my list I realize I have prioritized all along, but I wasn’t necessarily recognizing it as something that refueled me. After writing it down as something I need I notice it happening and I intentionally breathe it in, with gratitude and acknowledgement of its importance.

The next Motherhood Circle meets Saturday, September 29, 5-6:15 at Bluebird Exchange. Please join us if you desire to have some reflective, refueling time for yourself as a mother!
